Light a Candle in St. John Lateran Basilica for a Loved One
Have you ever wondered…
Can you light a candle in the Vatican for a Loved One?
Yes, you absolutely can.
Our guided pilgrimages offer a unique opportunity to light a candle in the Vatican, experience a personal moment of prayer, and connect with the heart of Catholic tradition.
If you can’t physically join us, you can still participate by purchasing a candle for our special candle lighting ceremony at St. John Lateran Basilica.
Our pilgrimage includes a special SPCP candle lighting ceremony, where we ask travelers to light candles on behalf of those unable to make the journey with us. This act symbolizes unity in prayer and devotion.
Light a candle for your prayer intention at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, Italy! It is the major basilica where the seat of the Pope is located. You may not recognize it from the famous photos of the Vatican but St. John Lateran is the Catholic Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Rome. Think of it as your major church of the diocese you are located in. It serves as the seat of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. We light all our candles in St John Lateran along with your prayer intentions.
Throughout Christian history, fire and light have played an important role in worship. Early Christians used candles as symbols in sacred spaces, and the tradition continues today. A perpetually burning candle by the tabernacle reminds us that God is present among us, just as He was in ancient times.
When you light a candle before a relic or statue, you honor the saint it represents and their full communion with God. By asking for their intercession, you also show your desire to remain in God’s presence throughout your daily life. Whether in the workplace or at home, this simple act of lighting a candle helps keep your faith burning bright.
So, can you light a candle in the Vatican? Yes – and we invite you to make it part of your spiritual journey.
***Please leave a note in regards to your prayer intention. We will send you a photo to commemorate the candle lighting. We will have our chaplain give a special blessing to offer your prayers and light the candle. You will receive an email containing a photo of our annual candle lighting ceremony.
